general description

A scrolling shooter with a top-down view (in the same vein as its compatriots Commandos or Ikari Warriors), players took the role of one of two commandos (the game featured 1 or 2 player simultaneous action on the same screen) who set off in search of the Heavy Barrel, a vast and devastating weapon. The Heavy Barrel has been dismantled and the players must find the pieces of it before putting it back together and using it on the end-of-game-boss.

about this version

This game featured rotational-type eight-point joysticks which allowed the player to turn in all directions as necessary. Featuring impressive (for the time) parallax graphics, and better-than-average sound, only one Heavy Barrel game was made by Data East.

In keeping with the shoot-em-up games of the time, frequent and outrageous power-ups were a hallmark of Heavy Barrel, which was later ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System home console.
